Twelve people narrowly escaped a fire that erupted at an escape room in Connaught Place on Sunday afternoon. The Delhi Fire Services (DFS) reported no injuries in the incident, which took place at Mystery Rooms, located on the first floor of M block in the outer circle near Shankar Market.

The DFS received the emergency call at 3:21 PM. Firefighters were dispatched immediately, with five fire tenders and 20 firefighters arriving at the scene. DFS Chief Atul Garg stated, “We rushed five fire tenders with 20 firefighters to the spot. The blaze was doused in a one-and-a-half-hour operation by 5 PM. Our firefighters carried out a search operation inside the premises to find out if anyone was trapped inside, but no one was. No injury or casualty was reported.”

Preliminary investigations suggest that a short-circuit in the air-conditioner near the entry/exit point triggered the fire. The rapid response from DFS averted what could have been a major incident, particularly given the high footfall in Connaught Place on Sundays.

“The fire caused damage to only two of the 150 escape rooms of Mystery Rooms. Since the incident occurred on a Sunday when there was a high footfall in Connaught Place, the quick response by firefighters averted a major incident,” commented a fire official who wished to remain anonymous.

Fire station officer Prem Lal, who led the firefighting efforts, recounted the situation: employees and customers quickly evacuated the building upon noticing flames and smoke. Flames were reportedly visible from the main road, billowing out from a window.

Mystery Rooms, spanning an area of 50×150 square feet, consists of 150 small rooms constructed primarily of wooden materials. These rooms are designed for escape games where participants solve puzzles within a set time frame to escape.

When contacted, a customer care executive from Mystery Rooms, Delhi-NCR, declined to comment, stating, “We cannot say anything at this moment,” before disconnecting the call.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Devesh Kumar Mahla confirmed that he is gathering more information about the incident.

The timely intervention by the DFS ensured the safety of all present and minimized the potential damage. The cause of the fire will be further investigated to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
