Home Minister recalls the Sikh Guru’s role in shaping the ‘Saint-Soldier’ tradition and promoting unity

Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah on Monday paid tribute to Guru Hargobind Sahib, the sixth Sikh Guru, on the occasion of his Jyoti-Jyot Diwas, which marks the anniversary of his passing. The tribute was shared through a message on social media platform X, where the minister reflected on the Guru’s historical and spiritual contributions.

In his message, Shah highlighted Guru Hargobind Sahib’s role in introducing the concept of the “Saint-Soldier,” a defining principle in Sikhism that combines spiritual devotion with the responsibility to protect justice and humanity. He noted that this philosophy marked a significant turning point in Sikh history, shaping the community into one that not only upholds faith but also stands against oppression.

The Home Minister also referred to the establishment of the Akal Takht under Guru Hargobind Sahib’s leadership, describing it as a crucial step in strengthening the institutional and moral foundations of the Sikh faith. The Akal Takht, located in Amritsar, continues to serve as one of the highest authorities in Sikhism, symbolizing both religious and temporal leadership.

Shah further recalled the Guru’s efforts to secure the release of Hindu prisoners held during the Mughal period, stating that the act conveyed a strong message of unity and solidarity between communities. He described Guru Hargobind Sahib’s legacy as one rooted in the protection of human dignity and the promotion of harmony.

Guru Hargobind Sahib, who lived from 1595 to 1644, is widely regarded as a transformative figure in Sikh history. His teachings emphasized a balance between spiritual guidance and temporal responsibility, often referred to as the concept of Miri-Piri. His leadership came during a time of challenges for the Sikh community, and his contributions continue to influence Sikh identity and values.

Observances such as Jyoti-Jyot Diwas hold significance for the Sikh community, serving as a moment to remember the teachings and legacy of the Gurus. Messages from public leaders on such occasions reflect broader recognition of India’s diverse cultural and religious traditions.
